Dr. Laurie Doering, pathology and molecular medicine, has devoted his entire research career to the restoration of neurological function via transplantation techniques in the brain and spinal cord.
Stem cells have been the central focus of research for the past 3 years. State of the art techniques have been established to isolate stage specific stem cells from the brain, optimize the development of the cells and test the efficacy of these cells as therapy in models of Parkinson’s disease.
Research training in the key areas of nervous system development and disease, tissue culture and neurotransplantation has set the foundation to understand and move stem cell therapy for Parkinson’s from the laboratory to the patient.
Doering’s laboratory is proficient in the isolation of stem cells, characterization of stem cells and selection of stem cells for brain repair.
Parkinson’s disease is considered the neurological disorder most likely to benefit from cell therapy and transplantation techniques. Doering is concentrating on matching the correct stem cell to the progressive stages of Parkinson’s in order to maximise the therapeutic value of stem cell transplants.
