Deacon's research examines ways to support the long-term resilience and sustainability of rural communities and their residents. He co-develops projects with relevant community stakeholders to ensure their voices and interests are represented.
Deacon's current projects are both Canadian and internationally focused, with specific focus on mental health and well-being, energy transition and planning, and rural economic development.
He is a full member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and a Registered Professional Planner (RPP).
