Sumner is an expert in how socioeconomic status and psychological and social factors affect mental health and quality of life, especially among women, children and people of color and different ethnicities.

Sumner examines how behavioral and psychosocial influences work to promote health behavior and disease management within cultural frameworks. For example, she has studied how racism affects mental health and can contribute to stress and depression.
