Fischer was born in New York, completing his first degree at the State University in Auburn. His post-graduate studies were done at Toronto, and he held an appointment at the University of Western Ontario before joined Memorial University as a researcher with the Atlantic Canada Shipping Project....

Bio/Research

Fischer was born in New York, completing his first degree at the State University in Auburn. His post-graduate studies were done at Toronto, and he held an appointment at the University of Western Ontario before joined Memorial University as a researcher with the Atlantic Canada Shipping Project. The University of Liverpool awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Letters in 2005 in recognition of his contributions to maritime scholarship. He is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and of the Society of Archivists.

Fischer was instrumental in founding the International Maritime Economic History Association and has edited the periodical published by the Association, the International Journal of Maritime History, since 1989. He is the series editor of Research in Maritime History and a past editor of The Northern Mariner/Le Marin du nord. Fischer´┐Żs publications in maritime history now encompass more than 200 titles.
