Bio/Research

I run the Bremner Editing Center at the University of Kansas School of Journalism. Before coming to KU, I was a news editor for 12 years at two newspapers. And before I got into journalism, I studied Slavic languages and linguistics, earning an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas.

My goal in my job is to make the inner workings of language accessible to nonspecialists. I teach classes on grammar, editing and writing at KU and I've presented numerous training workshops, webinars and conference sessions on aspects of written language. I consider myself a "reasonable prescriptivist," meaning that I understand current language standards and how to conform to them, but also realize that living languages evolve over time, and that what used to be "wrong" may change to become standard.
