Bio/Research

Dr. Lloyd James Dempsey, PhD is a member of the Board of Governors at the Royal Military College of Canada. Dr. James Dempsey attended the Universities of Alberta and Calgary where he obtained his BA and MA in history. He subsequently earned his Ph.D. at the University of East Anglia, England, in 2001. Dr. Dempsey arrived at the University of Alberta in 1992 as the new Director of the School of Native Studies (now Faculty of Native Studies). Previously, he was the Acting Dean for the Saskatoon Campus of the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College (now First Nations University of Canada). His book, Warriors of the King: Prairie Indians in World War I, was published in 1999, and he has written extensively on Aboriginal history and culture for over twenty five years. He is currently conducting research in the fields of warrior art, Blackfoot history and culture, Plains Indian history and culture, and Indian Veterans. Dr. Dempsey is a member of the Blood Indian Tribe of southern Alberta and was born in Calgary, Alberta.
