Throughout my career my research has focused primarily on mathematical understanding of children, youth, and preservice and inservice teachers. For almost a decade I have been particularly interested in the reasoning of young children from preschool to grade two. Throughout this work I have examined spatial and structural reasoning from an enactivist framework. Over the past several years I have continued to explore children’s spatial reasoning and mathematical generalizations through patterning and algebraic contexts. This research has led to key insights into children’s early mathematical understanding and has implications for teaching and curriculum in early patterning and algebraic thinking.
