Dr Skillen has worked as a public health nurse and nurse practitioner in Canada, and as a nurse researcher (community development) and regional nursing officer (public health services) in Colombia, South America. She taught advanced health assessment in Spanish to nurse-educators in partner faculties in Latin America. She has received many grants for educational innovations with a focus on international activities and learning technologies (bilingual videos, CD ROMs, WebCT, VISTA).
Dr Skillen was actively involved in Latin America for over 30 years. She is fluent in Spanish, has presented research papers in Spanish, and has worked in Bolivia and Colombia as an educational or project consultant for the Canadian Nurses Association, the Canadian Public Health Association, and the Canadian Society for International Health. She was Director of the North American Mobility (NAM) Project "Cooperative Cultural Partnerships in Nursing Education" (1997-2001), an HRDC-funded tri-country project. In April 2004, she developed with American and Mexican partners a proposal for a project titled "Transdisciplinary Teaching and Learning for Student and Community Development."
