Bio/Research
Principle research interests lie in American political development and popular politics. My book in progress is currently entitled Presidents, War, and Reform. It analyzes the contribution of presidents (since World War II) to major reform legislation and U.S. foreign policy choices between diplomacy and war, and investigates the relationship between major organized groups and presidential actions since the turn of the 20th century. Other research and teaching interests include the rise (and fall) of U.S. economic regulatory institutions, the executive branch generally, social movements, urban ecology and politics, and struggles to democratize governing processes.
