Zelin, an expert on modern Chinese history, teaches the history of the Qing dynasty, the last imperial dynasty of China, as well as courses on Chinese legal history and China’s early modern social and economic transformation. Her research has taken her to archives across China, where she has explored Qing tax reform and state-building, business organization and investment, and the development of early modern customary law governing private transactions.
