Dr Makoto Nagano obtained his DVM in Japan and PhD at University of Paris XI. He conducted his posdoctoral training at University of Pennsylvania. His research has focused on biology and clinical applications of stem cells in the male germ line. Using animal models, Dr Nagano studies the regulatory mechanism of stem cell fate decision, epigenetics of stem cells, stem cell aging, and the effect of chemical compounds (e.g., environmental toxins) on stem cells. He also aims to develop novel male fertility restoration strategies, particularly for prepubertal boys, who cannot benefit from sperm banking after sterilizing cancer therapy. To this end, he investigates the biology of human stem cells and their practical manipulations. Three operating grants from CIHR currently support his research.
