Diouf, whose research and teaching concentrates on urban, political and cultural history in colonial and post-colonial Africa, is a renowned scholar of West Africa. He previously served director of the research and documentation program of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA). At Columbia, he heads the Institute for African Studies, the University’s central forum and resource for African-centered academic research and program development, as well as local, national and international dialogue and action on Africa.
