Dr. Marie-Josée Hamel has been involved in CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) teaching, research and development since 1994. She has worked at Centre for Computational Linguistics of UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) for ten years, namely as co-investigator of an EU funded NLP-based CALL project called FreeText. She then took a position as Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics in the French Department of Dalhousie University and recently, at OLBI of the University of Ottawa. Her theoretical interests are in the contribution of linguistic and second language acquisition theories in CALL and applied ones, in the reuse of NLP (Natural language processing) and computer ergonomics technologies for CALL development purposes. Dr. Hamel is currently co-investigator of a SSHRC funded CALL dictionary project called "Dire autrement".
