Bio/Research

Dr. Marilyn Gates, Professor Emerita, and long time Associate Member of the Latin American Studies Program, received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of British Columbia. She joined the Sociology and Anthropology Department at Simon Fraser University in January 1974 to teach peasant society and social change in the Third World. Dr. Gates' areas of specializations are Latin America, Iberia and the Mediterranean realm, having undertaken particularly extensive fieldwork in Mexico, Guatemala, Spain and Portugal. Research interests include Mexican agricultural policy, the Third World debt crisis, development project evaluation, environmental anthropology, (biosphere reserve management). and life story narratives.
