Bio/Research

With a specialization in impact evaluation and measurement, Professor Constas’ research aims to develop assessment tools to measure the ways in which households and communities situated in stressed and shock prone contexts can achieve and maintain well-being (e.g., food security, economic security, and personal safety). The projects in which is he currently engaged are located in Somalia, Malawi, and India. Across all projects, his goal is to construct systems for data collection that will both advance theoretical formulations that will help explain observed variations in well-being and improve the effectiveness of related programs and interventions. Professor Constas is currently serving as the chair of the Resilience Measurement Technical Working Group, an effort jointly funded by the European Union and the United States Agency for International Development (under the direction of the Secretariat of the Food Security Information Network). His work has appeared in a selection of competitive peer reviewed journals intended for academic audiences and in other publication outlets intended for policy audiences. In addition to contributions made in the form of publications, Professor Constas regularly participates on expert panels on measurement and has provided consultancies to a number development-focused organizations including The World Food Programme, The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, and The United Nations Development Programme.
