Dr Ruhs is an economist specialising in the economics and politics of labour immigration, with a strong international comparative dimension.

Recent publications include 'Who Needs Migrant Workers? Labour Shortages, Immigration and Public Policy' (co-editor, 2010). Martin has been a member of the UK's Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) since 2008. In 2007-08 he served as Specialist Advisor to a House or Lords Economic Affairs Committee Inquiry into the economic impacts of immigration in the UK. He has worked with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the Global Commission on International Migration (GCIM), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
