Bio/Research

I am conducting research on basic processes of cognition and memory. One aspect of this work investigates embodied cognition, especially the ways in which knowledge about manual interactions with objects is used when identifying manipulable objects (such as tools) or when understanding sentences describing interactions with such objects. My research group currently is using behavioral measures such as time taken to make cued hand action responses. In addition, we are developing paradigms that include measurement of event-related potentials, on-line tracking of hand position and shape, and tracking of eye movements to provide detailed analyses of the recruitment of action representations. Another aspect of my research examines cognitive control, particularly how resolution of conflict between two competing processes modulates the subsequent functioning of those processes when performed in the absence of competition. Various other lines of investigation are also underway, including studies of implicit memory and contextual influences on skilled word reading performance. Recently completed projects include a study of cognitive skill acquisition through video game experience among adolescents and a report on the discovery of a new visual illusion (the bicycle illusion) along with psychophysical experiments that reveal important features of the illusion.
