Bio/Research

I am currently researching the question of the imagination in early modern philosophy. The concept of imagination underwent great transformations during this period, which brought about far-reaching consequences in the theory of knowledge, the development of philosophical aesthetics and the philosophy of culture and history. Working on this concept takes one to the centre of the making of modern philosophy.

I am now working on a less-known character of the early modern philosophy, namely Fontenelle, who, in fact, played a crucial role on the Enlightenment thought, both in the development of the criticism towards superstitions and revealed religions and the emergence of an historical perspective of sciences. The goal of this research is precisely to show that this historical perspective on the sciences, which has been developed during his 40 years career as the Académie des Sciences' secretary, is rooted in his historical account of superstitions, and thus of the development of human mind. This project is made possible thaks to the SSHRC research grant program.
