Bio/Research

Professor Murray Thomson is Director of the Combustion Research Laboratory (CRL) at the University of Toronto. He is a Professor in the Dept. Of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and is cross appointed with the Dept. of Chemical Engineering. He has more than 25 years of experience conducting research on the topics of combustion, fuels and air pollution. The Combustion Research lab specializes in (1) the combustion of alternative fuels, including biodiesel, bio-oil, bio-jet fuel and butanol, (2) the formation of particulate air pollutants such as soot, (3) the development of fundamental and applied models, (4) the development of optical process sensors for combustion applications. The focus of the work is on developing a fundamental understanding of these processes and reducing greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions.

He is on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Section of the Combustion Institute. He is Green Energy Theme leader and a member of the ABIN Network Management Committee of the ìAgricultural Biorefinery Innovation Networkî. His is also a Project Leader for the ìEnabling Biodieselî project of the AUTO21 National Centre of Excellence.
