Dr. Nick Bellissimo is a Professor and Director of the Nutrition Discovery Labs in the School of Nutrition at Toronto Metropolitan University. His research explores the biological, psychological, and environmental factors that influence human ingestive behavior. Through his interdisciplinary research program, he has examined the relationships among macronutrient composition, exercise, hormonal regulation, and environmental factors, with the goal of informing the development of evidence-based guidelines for promoting healthy body weights. Dr. Bellissimo has extensive expertise in designing experimental trials on diet and exercise, as well as in developing and testing novel food ingredients and formulations for their effects on satiety and health-related biomarkers.
Since 2009, he has secured continuous external research funding from both government and industry sources. His contributions have resulted in over 100 peer-reviewed publications, the training of more than 75 highly qualified personnel, and more than 100 abstracts and conference proceedings. Recognized for his excellence in research, teaching, and leadership, Dr. Bellissimo has received numerous competitive awards, including the Dean’s Teaching Award (2014), the Sue Williams Excellence Teaching Award (2016), the Dean’s Scholarly, Research and Creative Activity Award (2017), the Canadian Nutrition Society Volunteer Leadership Award (2019), and the Dean’s Service Award (2025). He is an active member of several journal editorial boards and serves as a scientific advisor to government agencies, research institutes, and the food industry.
