Bio/Research
Oliver Neumann is teaching in the Master of Architecture and the Environmental Design undergraduate program. He is also an Associate Chair of Wood Building Design and Construction at UBC and an Associate Faculty member at the UBC Pulp and Paper Centre. He holds a professional degree in architecture from the Technical University in Berlin, Germany, and a Masters in Advanced Architectureal Design from Columbia University in New York. He is a licenced architect in Berlin, Germany.
Prior to joining University of British Columbia Architecture as an Assistant Professor in 2003, he taught at the Hochschule fuer Wirtschaft, Technik und Kultur in Leipzig, Germany, at the UBC School of Architecture, and as the 2002-2003 Oberdick Research and Teaching Fellow at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan. At UBC, he is teaching design studios, theory seminars, and seminars on digital fabrication including design-build projects. In addition, he is working with students in the MASA program and with Masters and PhD students with a focus on interdisciplinary studies.
Oliver's research focuses on the role of digital technology in the building process and in broader speculations of emerging material culture. His building research and teaching projects explore contemporary fabrication technologies, mass-customization processes, and their implications for ecological design concepts, design methodology, and construction. Oliver's interdisciplinary research projects build on collaborations with wood scientists, engineers, fabricators, and material suppliers. Recent design research projects that explore the potential of digital wood fabrication include the Loon Lake Solid-Wood-Wall Panel Cabin (2006), the Loon Lake Outdoor Theater Roof Structure (2006-12), the Naramata Roof Structure (2007), the Huilo-Huilo Viewing Platform (2008), and inter/section (2010).
His publications include FUTURE WOOD – Innovation in Building Design + Manufacturing, edited together with Philip Beesley, and Emergent Programmatic Form-ation. Parametric Design Beyond Complex Geometries, written in collaboration with Yehia Madkour. Other projects include Media on the City – The Lee Building, a video project developed and produced in collaboration with Kate Hennessy.
