Bio/Research

I received my PhD in Sociology from the University of Manchester (UK) in 2010, and held a post-doc at Waterloo from 2011-2013 in the Sociology and Legal Studies department. I taught at Waterloo and McMaster before joining the Criminology department at Laurier. I have also held research posts and teaching positions at Manchester University, Middlesex University London, and the University of Wales Bangor. I study the handling of evidence in officials circumstances – courts of law, military proceedings, government meetings, etc. I am interested in rules for adopting evidence, the reasoning practices involved in interpreting evidence, and the outcomes of the proceedings that handle various sorts of evidence, but in particular, video evidence of (state) violence. I largely incorporate perspectives from symbolic interactionism, science and technology studies, and ethnomethodology in my inquiries and examinations of these handlings of evidence.

Ongoing projects:

Killing in the Name Of: Images and Interpretations of State Violence – ongoing research project examining official treatments of videos and photographs of state violence (military and police) and the sense-making practices employed in evaluating those images.

The Gardiner Project – an examination of the process conducted by Toronto City Council to adopt the "Hybrid" alternative for the Gardiner Expressway, with a particular focus on the scenario-building software that was employed to build case studies of potential Gardiner Expressway configurations.
