Bio/Research

Dr. Paul Adams, is a Professor of Medicine and Chief of Gastroenterology at the University of Western Ontario, in London, Ontario. Dr. Adams has been working in the field of hemochromatosis and iron overload since 1977. He graduated from medical school at Queens University (Kingston, Ontario) in 1980 and completed internal medicine training in Toronto and New York (Mount Sinai). He completed a GI fellowship at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and studied hemochromatosis in Brisbane, Australia and Rennes, France.

He was a Principal Investigator of the NIH sponsored HEIRS study which has screened 101,168 people for iron overload. He has studied many aspects of iron overload, including genotypic-phenotypic correlations, cost-effectiveness of screening, psychosocial impact of testing, and new genetic polymorphisms of the HFE gene. He a practicing gastroenterologist at University Hospital in London, Ontario.

He has published in the journals Nature Genetics, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology. He is the past Editor of the Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology.

He has received the Canadian Liver Foundation Gold Medal 2010, Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2002, and the Dean's Award of Excellence from the University of Western Ontario.
