Paulette Guitard received a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from the Université de Montréal in 1985, a Masters of Education from the Université du Québec à Rimouski in 1993 and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences (Rehabilitation) from the Université de Montréal in 2003. The topic of her thesis was playfulness in adults. She has worked in adult mental health, paediatrics, and acute rehabilitation (adults and adolescents). She joined the faculty of the occupational therapy program in 1992, and served as program director from 1994 to 1997.
