At the University of Oregon, she is an associate professor of political science and faculty affiliate of the UO Center for the Study of Women in Society. In her 2012 book “American Marriage: A Political Institution,” she examined matrimony’s historical and contemporary role as an institution that grants and withholds rights, including former slaves post-emancipation, people of color, women, immigrants, LGBT people, and low-income people.
