Bio/Research

Rasha Ahmed’s research interest is in the area of environmental economics. She looks at the challenges facing policy makers in designing and implementing environmental standards that are politically feasible as well as welfare improving. Specifically focusing on markets of polluting products, she considers different approaches to reducing pollution ranging from voluntary initiatives to pure regulation. Professor Ahmed focuses on developing standards that reduce pollution with minimal negative, or preferably positive, impact on firm profit. Her work has analyzed the development of green product markets where she shows that while it may be possible to achieve an improvement in environmental performance as those markets grow, it is not a guaranteed outcome.

In the classroom, Professor Ahmed asks students to apply the concepts they learn and encourages them to respond to local problems as well as to adopt a global perspective to problem solving. She enjoys sharing her research with students and believes it is a very useful learning experience for both of them.
