Ray Weldon is an academic expert on active earthquake fault zones and on earthquake probabilities, including earthquake early warning systems for the Cascadia and San Andreas faults on the west coast. His work in national hazard mapping is used by the insurance industry and for tsunami monitoring. An elected member the University of Oregon’s “Wise Heads” advisory group, he has also served as a the department head for geological sciences and an invited member of national executive committees including the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Seismic Hazard Map Advisory Committee, the Working Group on California Earthquake Probabilities, the time-dependent earthquake rupture forecasts that are endorsed by the USGS, Southern California Earthquake Center and California Geological Survey.
