Bio/Research

Although originally from Alberta, where I completed my Ph.D at the University of Alberta and taught at Athabasca University, I have been employed at The University of Western Ontario since 1988. My research interests are in the areas of the history of Canadian education, gender equity, educational policy and the politics of education. I am working on several other projects including one on high school student activism and another on the surveillance of teachers engaged in political work.

My teaching interests are diverse and I offer a range of courses in the graduate program, including Education 500: Educational Policy in Ontario, 1945 to the Present (1997-2006); Education 500: Power, Politics and Policy in Education: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives (2007- ); Education 615: Family and School in Historical Perspective; Education 701: Research in Education. I hold the Edward G. Pleva Award for Excellence in Teaching and the OCUFA Award for Outstanding Contributions to University Teaching. In 2005 I was honoured to receive the Achievement Award from the Canadian Association for the Study of Women and Education. In 2007 Canadian Dimension recognized my work as a "Teacher Who Changes the World."

I serve on several university committees, the University Senate, the board of the University of Western Ontario Faculty Association and the Research Review Committee of the Merrymount Children's Centre. I also work in various capacities with a range of community and political organizations
