Bio/Research

Prof. Moccia has over 40 years of career experience in aquatic animal farming systems, or aquaculture. His research spanned a number of topical areas including: environmental impacts of farms, salmonid production technologies, fish physiology, animal welfare, and regulatory and policy approaches for the aquaculture industry.

Prior to joining U of G, Moccia was self-employed in the private sector, having established two SME start-ups specializing in ag-based technologies in the aquatic food production industry.

Moccia also sits on various national organizations which advocate for sustainable aquaculture development, and he was instrumental in developing Canada's first Welfare Code of Practice for aquaculture. He is a scientific diver and past associate vice-president of research managing the university's agri-food portfolio.
