Dr. Richard Nuckols (he/him) is an assistant professor in Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo.
Dr. Nuckols’ interest are in evaluating, assisting, and rehabilitating functional human movement through wearable sensing and robotics. He takes a holistic bioinspired approach in his research covering a broad range of disciplines and areas of expertise with particular focus on three areas that are mutually supportive:
1) fundamental and applied neuromuscular mechanics of human movement, and the interaction mechanics among the human, tech, and environment,
2) development and implementation of new wearable sensing and assistive technologies, and
3) application of neuromuscular principles and technology to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives.
Dr. Nuckols firmly believes in a human-centric bioinspired approach for developing wearable technologies that solve complex real-world problems. For example, his experimental biomechanics studies with novel sensing strategies have informed effective assistance strategies for variable walking tasks. Dr Nuckols has applied his research to applications including enhancing movement in healthy individuals and restoring/assisting movement individuals’ post-stroke.
