Professor Solomon has been engaged in research and teaching on alcohol and drug policy, and tort, criminal and health law for almost 40 years. He received the University of Western Ontario Prize for Teaching Excellence in 1981, several other University teaching honours, and the Ontario Confederation of Faculty Associations Award in Teaching Excellence in 1986. More recently, Professor Solomon was a finalist in TVO’s 2009 Ontario’s Best Lecture Competition.
Professor Solomon has authored or co-authored almost 90 journal articles and book chapters, and more than 150 government reports and studies. He served on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Addiction Research Foundation, and was a founding member of both the Canadian Drug Reform Foundation and the National Alcohol Issues Panel. He has frequently appeared as an expert witness before various Parliamentary Committees, briefed the Prime Minister and other senior federal and provincial Parliamentarians, and served as a consultant to numerous government agencies and research organizations.
He is currently the National Director of Legal Policy for Mothers Against Drunk Driving Canada, and a member of national and international traffic safety organizations. The International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety named Professor Solomon as the recipient of the 2007 Widmark Award. This is the highest honour that the Council can confer on an individual and is awarded for an outstanding, sustained and meritorious contribution to the advancement of traffic safety science and research. Three years later, The Kaiser Foundation named Professor Solomon as the recipient of its 2010 National Award for Excellence in Public Policy. The recipient is selected by an independent National Advisory Board, based on a record of outstanding achievement in reducing alcohol and drug harm through effective public policy.
