Dr. Ronald Pushchak was a professor in the School of Occupational and Public Health at Toronto Metropolitan University with a joint appointment in the School of Urban and Regional Planning. Dr. Pushchak was the founding Director of the Masters program in Environmental Applied Science and Management in the School of Graduate Studies, and served as Director from 1999 to 2007. He currently teaches graduate courses including the graduate research seminar and hazardous facility siting in the Environmental Applied Science and Management program.
Dr. Pushchak graduated with a BA in Geography from the University of Toronto. He completed his Masters in Environmental Studies (MES), at York University and holds a PhD in Environmental Planning from Princeton University. In addition to his academic and research activities, he was involved in a number of professional environmental planning cases including the Ontario efforts to develop legislation to protect municipal drinking water sources, the first Canadian concept for disposal of nuclear fuel waste, The Ontario government's efforts to locate municipal waste landfills in the Greater Toronto Area, and the Department of National Defence proposal for low-level military flight training in Labrador.
Dr. Pushchak was also a consultant in several environmental facility siting cases including the Environmental Advisory Team for Environment Canada on the Canadian concept for disposal of high-level radioactive waste and the Technical Experts Committee for source water protection for the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. He has published in the fields of environmental assessment, hazardous waste management, high-level radioactive waste disposal, and on the participation of First Nation's people in Canadian plans to dispose of radioactive wastes. Dr. Pushchak was also past President and member of the Board of Environmental Defence Canada that defends natural resources are threatened such as the Oak Ridges Moraine and Ontario Greenbelt.
