My research focuses on reading ability and disability, but also encompasses wider issues of learning disability as well. Within reading, my research is currently particularly concerned with fluency, and am beginning a research program looking at fluency in music reading. I am also part of a project looking at assessment issues for inquiry in education.
Primary Area: Cognitive Psychology, focussing particularly on the processes underlying reading acquisition and the causes and characterisation of Reading Disability. The study of the task of reading and the development of the processes which support its initial acquisition, such as phonological awareness, leads one naturally to the study of what happens when those processes fail. Reading Disability is one of the most common causes of educational failure and can have serious consequences for the further cognitive and affective development of afflicted individuals. It is also a common accompanying factor in many other disabilities, for instance, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.
