Dr Basson is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and the Director of the University of British Columbia Sexual Medicine Program. Her research team’s recent CIHR funded study includes disconfirming any differences in androgen activity, however measured, between women with and without Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder, but finding instead altered stress hormones in the clinical women.
She was recently awarded further CIHR funds to pursue this investigation. Her 80 plus peer reviewed publications include a series in The Lancet on sexual dysfunction subsequent to illness, a NEJM review on clinical aspects of women’s sexual dysfunction, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ series on sexual dysfunction plus online reviews for the BMJ ‘Point of Care’ and BMJ Best Practice. In 2003, and 2009 she was vice-chair of the 2nd and 3rd International Consultations on Men and Women’s Sexual Dysfunction sponsored by ICUD, ESSM, WAS, IASR, ISSWSH. As Co-chair of an International Committee organized by the American Urological Association Foundation in 2003 to recommend revised definitions of women’s sexual dysfunction, she is now a Consultant to the American Psychiatry Association’s DSM5 Committee. Dr Basson is extensively involved in teaching at undergraduate, post graduate and CME levels.
