Dr. S. M. Troian received her B.A. degree in Physics from Harvard University and an M.S. and PhD degree in Physics from Cornell University. In 1993 she joined the Faculty of the School of Engineering & Applied Science of Princeton University and in 1999 became an Affiliate Faculty Member of the Department of Physics. In 2005, she was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society in recognition of her work on small scale hydrodynamic, micro- and optofluidic systems. She joined Caltech in early 2007 and is currently Professor of Applied Physics, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering.
Troian is currently a member of DARPA's Defense Sciences Research Council as well as the Microdevices Laboratory of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. Dr. S. M. Troian specializes in the science, development and design of micro- and nanoscale systems based on nonlinear wave phenomena in thin films.
