Bio/Research

Dr Sara Meltzer obtained her MD from the University of Alberta with specialty training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at McGill and the University of Paris, France. She is a consultant in endocrinology at the McGill University Health Centre - Royal Victoria Hospital.

As Clinical Vice-Chair and subsequently Chair of the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) Clinical and Scientific Section (C & SS), she initiated the development of the CDA Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs). She was Chair of the Steering Committee for the 1998 Guidelines for the Management of Diabetes in Canada, for which she was given the CDA Banting Award in 1999. In 2001, she received the Gerald Wong Award for her “outstanding service and contribution for people with diabetes”. Dr Meltzer chaired the pregnancy subcommittee and was a Steering Committeemember for the 2003 CDA CPGs. As founding chairperson for the CDA CanDIPS (Canadian Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group) she represented Canada on the International Association for Diabetes in Pregnancy committee developing a consensus for diagnostic criteria. She is a presently a member of the 2011 World Health Organization’s Guideline Development Group for updating the 1999 WHO recommendations on the Diagnosis and Screening for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

She has helped to develop educational materials to help people with diabetes including the initial ‘Diabetaide’ Manual for Diabetes Quebec, co-edited for 10 years the Canadian Diabetes Association “Practical Diabetes Management Manual” and has authored a book in the CMA personal health series “Diabetes in Adults”. Dr Meltzer has also completed a CDA-funded study evaluating GDM diagnostic criteria and a CIHR-funded study of long-term outcomes of women with GDM and their offspring.
