Bio/Research

Scott Smedley is an Associate Professor of Biology. Following undergraduate study at Williams College, he completed a Ph.D. at Cornell University, joining the Trinity faculty in 1997. As a chemical ecologist Smedley, along with his research students, investigates how insects use chemicals to thwart their predators. He has over 25 publications, including a number coauthored with Trinity undergraduates. Their research has been covered by such popular sources as The New York Times and National Public Radio. Smedley’s teaching focuses on ecology and invertebrate zoology. His courses, ranging from first-year seminars to advanced biology classes, all benefit from study at the Trinity College Field Station at Church Farm in Ashford, Connecticut. Through field work there, his students, biology majors and non-majors alike, learn to become explorers of the natural world.
