After receiving a BA in philosophy from the University of Colorado (Denver), Shane migrated slowly across the continent (by way of train) to Boston, where he received his MA and Ph.D. in philosophy at Boston College. He taught at Stonehill College in Easton, MA, for one year as a visiting professor, during which time he taught introductory and ethics courses.
