In addition to teaching and course writing, Shiling is currently conducting research and writing papers in Chinese history, especially on Chinese labour and women. Her areas of research also include rural distance education in China. Although trained as a historian, Shiling McQuaide has in the past also taught Chinese language and culture, having a strong interest in Chinese literature. Her publications include several translations.
