Shiling McQuaide is from mainland China. Before joining Athabasca University, she taught in Beijing, China, Ontario, and B.C., Canada. She holds the following degrees: B.A. (Beijing University, Beijing, China), M.A. (Beijing Normal University, Beijing China), Ph.D. (Queen's University, ON Canada).
In addition to teaching and course writing, Shiling is currently conducting research and writing papers in Chinese history, especially on Chinese labour and women. Her areas of research also include rural distance education in China. Although trained as a historian, Shiling McQuaide has in the past also taught Chinese language and culture, having a strong interest in Chinese literature. Her publications include several translations.
