Dr. Fonfara is a specialist in companion animal cardiology with a strong interest in age and disease-related changes to the heart and how these translate into clinical practice.
Fonfara's recent research focuses on changes in the heart of cats that are caused by age and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), the most common heart diseases in cats, and whether these might differ between female and male cats. The aim is to characterize the processes involved in aging and HCM in the heart and with it identify factors that can be used as diagnostic markers and potentially for treatment approaches. This will improve the diagnosis and management of HCM and animal health and welfare. The findings might further be applicable to other species and humans.
