Bio/Research

Dr. Steffany Bennett is a lipid biochemist, systems biologist, and neurobiologist working to both block the pathological changes in brain lipid metabolism that precipitate Alzheimer's Disease and to promote functional neural cell replacement by altering cell-cell (connexin-mediated) communication. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa in 1995 and completed post-doctoral training at the W. Alton Jones Cell Science Centre, USA (Lab of Dr. Martin Tenniswood) in collaboration with (Dr. Bruce Pappas, Carleton University) and Harvard Medical School, USA (Lab of Dr. David Paul) in collaboration with Dr. Gerry Melino (University of Tor Vergata, Italy). In 1999, she was recruited to the University of Ottawa and is currently a Professor and University Research Chair in Neurolipidomics in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology, University of Ottawa. She is also the Director of the Neural Regeneration Laboratory, Associate Director (Education) of the Ottawa Institute of Systems Biology, and the Director of the STIHR/CIHR Training Program in Neurodegenerative Lipidomics.
