Bio/Research

Dr Stephen Raverty is a board certified veterinary pathologist with the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, Animal Health Center, Abbotsford, BC. For the last 10 years Stephen has been pursuing diagnostic and research interests in stranded marine mammals throughout the northeastern Pacific region. More recently his work has taken him to the arctic and New Zealand.

His interest in aquatic and marine mammals started in high school as a volunteer at the Vancouver Aquarium, which spurred a career in veterinary pathology. He obtained a BSc in Zoology from the University of British Columbia and after his first year of veterinary training, took a year off to pursue an MSc in aquatic pathobiology at the University of Stirling, Scotland. On completion of this MSc, he continued with a combined DVM and PhD program. After his veterinary and graduate studies, Stephen undertook a post doctoral fellowship at Mississippi State University, then a residency of comparative pathology through the Bronx Zoo and Animal Medical Center, New York. He has been employed with the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands since 1997.
