Bellovin studies computer networks and security, as well as the relationship between the two. Together with Bill Cheswick, he produced the 2nd Edition 2003 version of Firewalls and Internet Security: Repelling the Wily Hacker. Bellovin, who holds several patents on cryptographic and network protocols, is a member of the Science & Technology Advisory Committee of the Department of Homeland Security and has worked for Bell Labs and AT&T Labs Research.
