My main area of interest is the treatment of smokers who visit the hospital emergency department (EDs). This visit often represents a “teachable moment” to identify, intervene, and refer smokers to treatment. Our group has shown that smokers with a tobacco-related reason for the visit, like a respiratory infection, are more likely to quit than smokers in the ED for other reasons. Current work focuses on designing effective interventions that are sensitive to the time, resource, and staffing demands of a busy ED.
