Bio/Research

Kurtz began his career at the University in the Mathematics Department in 1981, then became a founding member of the Computer Science Department in 1983. He devotes most of his research to the mathematical theory of computation, especially an area known as complexity theory. This research examines the amount of time and memory required to perform certain types of computations. Kurtz also serves on the Board of Advisors of Open Channel Software. He developed the concept for the company, along with two colleagues, in 1999 to efficiently publish university software while allowing for the commercialization of the most promising programs.
