My current focus of research is on neuropathic pain and particularly neuropathic pain assessment in the community and in the hospital setting. In 2010, I was successful in securing competitive grant funding for a project which investigated the use of a neuropathic pain assessment tool, incorporated within the post-operative pain assessment sheet. The study results demonstrated that nurses were able to identify patients with neuropathic pain in the immediate post-operative period. This ensured that select patients received physician assessment and then management for their neuropathic pain symptoms. This was an innovative nursing activity and therefore the results from the study have informed nursing practise with the aim of improving patient outcomes. I have also been successful in gaining funding from the BC Burns Foundation Fund, to undertake a retrospective chart survey investigating prevalence of chronic pain with neuropathic characteristics in the patient with burns. This study is phase 1 of a program of research investigating chronic pain and its management in the burns population. I submitted a proposal to CIHR recently to investigate the effectiveness of a nurse led biopsychosocial model
