Bio/Research

My current interests include working with youth on arts-integrated media production in school and community settings. In particular, I am interested in how youth use media resources to to engage in cultural discourse and critique. With a team of doctoral students, I recently completed a SSHRC funded project in three sites and we are currently working on a scholarly volume. A related project, also with a team of doctoral students and funded by an Andrews Grant, explores the engagement of street youth in informal learning and public pedagogy.

I am also engaged in a series of projects in Botswana focusing on new literacies among youth in schools and among women in a remote community.

I am also interested in literary theoretical perspectives in relation to contemporary adolescent literature, and participate in the UBC mulitidisciplinary children's literature program (English, Creative Writing, SLAIS, LLED).
