Bio/Research

Thomas Palakkamanil has several years experience in the health, social development and education field. He has a Master's Degree in Public Health Education from the University of Madras. After immigrating to Canada he worked for two years in Nigeria supervising a Health Education Program (Health Education Training Program) which was funded by CIDA. After returning to Canada in 1980, he joined the University of Ottawa for his graduate studies in Health Administration after which he moved to the University of Alberta. He specialized in primary health care and community development. While he was working on his thesis, he worked two years as program coordinator for 50 mentally challenged adults for the Good Samaritan Society of Edmonton.

In 1983 he joined the Medical Services Branch and worked with the Dene people of the Northwest Territories. He served as the Director of Health and Social Services Programs for the 26 Dene communities of the Western Arctic. He was one of the key people involved in the reorganization of the Health Services of the Western Arctic. He was directly involved in the transfer of Health Services to territorial governments from Health Canada (Medical Services Branch) with the consultation of the 26 Dene community leaders of the Western Arctic.

Thomas is very much involved in native health care in Canada. He sits on various national and provincial organizations as an expert on community based program planning. He also serves as an advisor to native organizations regarding their health care planning, programs, etc. He has published various papers regarding this field and made a number of conference presentations in both Canada and the United States.
