Dr. Tim Sly holds qualifications in public health from the United Kingdom and Canada, and worked in the public health field for 14 years before joining the teaching staff at Toronto Metropolitan University in 1982. He was the program's director for more than nine years. In addition to his faculty appointment in this school, he also holds an Associate Faculty position with the School of Graduate Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University and is currently an external examiner for the University of Technology in Jamaica.
Dr. Sly holds a Master's degree in Epidemiology from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Western Ontario, and a PhD in Risk Studies from Teesside University (UK). He is a member of the Canadian Public Health Association, the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI), and the International Society for Infectious Diseases. He has been published in Canada, the USA, and the UK, and writes a regular column in the Environmental Health Review. Two of his papers on risk communication are in current use by the US Department of Health and Social Services and the Government of New Zealand. His consultant work has taken him to Central and South America, and to Ottawa as an expert committee member for Canada's Auditor-General. During 2005, he was invited to teach a number of sessions at national universities in Taiwan.
His recent and current research involvement is with diseases such as SARS and Avian influenza, as well as pandemic planning.
