Tsuneko Iwai holds a BA in Anthropology and a MEd and PhD in Applied Linguistics. Her areas of interest include sociolinguistics, pragmatics, second language acquisition and foreign language pedagogy. She also has a special interest in anthropological linguistics in Japanese and in the interface between culture and language as manifested in communication. Her research focuses on examining how Japanese culture influences communicative behaviour of the Japanese.
Prior to joining McMaster, she taught at McGill University and the University of Toronto. Here at McMaster, she teaches beginner to advanced level Japanese and is actively involved in Japanese language education in Canada.
